CAPTAINS UPDATE, SEPTEMBER 2014

Following on from my last report in July I am happy to say that we had a very successful Summer Party BBQ. This was held on the 22nd August after the Ladies v Gents golf competition which was very closely contested. We played 2 formats, one being combined stableford points and the other being Matchplay. The results on the combined stableford points per team, the men were the victors by one point. However, the results on the Matchplay , the ladies were the victors. So, to eradicate any ill feeling, we called it an honourable draw.

A week or so later, we then had the Captain v Vice Captain match. I, unfortunately, was unable to be present when the draw was done. Which meant I left it to my Vice Captain, David Walling. He obviously abused the situation and chose all the best players!! The overall result was a comprehensive thrashing of 10 to 4. The BBQ on both occasions was excellent and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended and my thanks go to Mario and his team.

We then move on to my special day, My Captain’s Day. I have to say I’m extremely grateful and honoured that so many members and friends supported me by taking part. Having been worried about the predicted forecast it turned out to be a perfect day to play golf, blue skies, warm and not too much wind. A big thank you to my special group of ladies, Judith Galvin, Helen Brennan, Sandra Elliott and Debbie Lanario for all their help on the day at the halfway house and organising the table plans. Congratulations to all the prizewinners, there were some fantastic results, very closely contested. Mary Berry winning the Ladies and Brendan Murphy winning the Gents, with ironically enough, the same number of points, 41. Congratulations also to Steve Juster on winning the Visitors Prize with 39 points. The golf course was in excellent condition and my thanks go to Nelson and his team for all their hard work. In the evening 160 people attended the celebrations and I have to say the whole thing ran very smoothly. The food was excellent and yet again my appreciation goes to Mario and his team. A big thank you also, to my good friend, Richard Bottomley, for making a speech on behalf of the visitors and guests although I could have done without him exposing my old nicknames from my Rugby Club days! Thanks also to my Vice Captain, David Walling ,for all his help on the day. Not only with the cards but also for the prize presentation and his speech in the evening. My appreciation goes to all the committee members for their help in the run-up to Captain’s Day to ensure everything ran well. Most importantly, I would like to thank all the members for my gift. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole day and hope that you, the members, did too.

The Interclub League Team continues to do well. We are currently lying in 2nd place in our group, with games in hand. My thanks go to all those who have taken part so far and good luck to the team for the remaining matchs.

The Autumn Festival will soon be upon us, starting next Friday with the traditional opening Texas Scramble. I look forward to seeing many old friends and new who are coming out especially for the event. I am keeping my fingers crossed for the sun to shine and hope that all those taking part, members and visitors alike, have a thoroughly good time. As always the Autumn Festival is extremely popular and the number of people taking part is fantastic.

Happy Golfing, The Captain (aka B.B.H.)
