CAPTAINS UPDATE NOVEMBER 2014

After my last update, following on from my very enjoyable Captain’s Day, we had the Newsham Trophy which Brian has supported since his arrival at our club. It was won by a delighted Ian Derbyshire, and enjoyed by all those who took part.

The next big event was the Autumn Festival, which this year was extremely well supported and I have to say a big thank you to Brian Noble and his team in the Pro shop as well as Nelson and his team for presenting the course in such good condition. The feedback I have received was extremely positive and this bodes well for the forthcoming Xmas festival which I am sure will be a great success.

My congratulations go to all the festival winners, especially, Brendan Murphy winning the Owners and Golf Santo Antonio Trophies and Thelma Pickard for winning the Ladies Owners Trophy and Carol Newland the Golf Santo Antonio Ladies Trophy.

A couple of weeks ago we had my Captain’s Away trip to Penina. Special thanks goes to David Walling for organising the weekend and to all the members and friends who supported me. Of course, the good weather once again shone down on us and this was organised by me! The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all. My thanks go to Rui Baptista for sponsoring the prizes and the winning team was David Walling, John Duhig, Wendy Harnett and Paul Hughes. After the prize presentation I handed over to David Walling to announce his Vice Captain during his tenure as Captain. I’m sure you will join with me to wish Rod Smith the best of luck for all the work he will be doing over the next couple of years.

In my last update I mentioned the interclub team being 2nd in the league, with 2 matches to play. I’m glad to report that we subsequently managed to win both and achieved the required number of points to push Alto Club into 2nd place in our division by 2 points. Subsequently, we then had to play a “home” and “away” match against Vila Sol to decide the Overall Champions, and we were honoured by many club members spectating and supporting us at both venues. Floresta Parque won it by 5.5 points to 4.5 points and I am extremely proud and grateful to you all. It was 2005 when the club last won the League and I would like to thank all the players who have participated this year.

We have been extremely lucky this year weatherwise, only until yesterday cancelling 2 events. Please continue to support the competitions and the new “meal deals” that follow on from our competition days. So far those people who have taken advantage of these food offers have again given glowing reports.

Happy Golfing to you all. Your Captain, Bob

PS. The Sagittarius Salver competition was played on the 10th December and was won by J.Brodie and F.Borges with the magnificent score of 77. I spoke to Pamela Sparling in the days leading up to the event and she apologised for not travelling to PdF for the competition but she is in the middle of a complex renovation of her new property in France and simply could not get away. She wishes all the members and staff at PdF a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
